The Google Reader client Reeder is now available as an iPad version.

I’ve been using the beta versions for two weeks and it only crashed once while loading a web page with lots of pictures (a post on http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/) which was no surprise as the iPad just couldn’t handle the amount of data (out of memory). Otherwise it works flawlessly, faster the NetNewsWire on my Mac and is pure fun to use.

Go to the app store and download Reeder for iPad now if you use both, an iPad and Google Reader. It’s a must have!

My favorite newsreader Reeder will soon be available on iPad.

Twitter followers of @reederapp got a sneak peek of the iPad version of this minimalistic and beautiful, yet powerful news reader that syncs with Google’s feed aggregation service.

I especially like the pinch to open gesture for feed folders and sure hope there won’t be any problems during the submission process to the app store. Apple rejected an iPad app for using this gesture before.

I’m really excited to load Reeder onto my iPad in the near future which should arrive after another (long) week of waiting — my iPad that is.

In the meantime check out Reeder’s website and Reeder for iPhone on the app store.
Also take a look at even more gorgeous screenshots of the current beta version posted to Twitter: tweet 1, tweet 2, tweet 3, tweet 4.

While moderating (mostly spam) comments on this blog (cinnamonthoughts.org) today, I came across a pingback that looked a bit strange so I followed the link and discovered this:

The blog reposted several of my posts including the one on Reeder and my latest Emojinator update without linking to my blog or giving credit. It looks like they are the original authors of those posts. There’s also reposted content from other websites. <ins datetime="2009-12-28T19:54:50+00:00">The only thing they change is adding ads (which my ad blocker removed in the screenshots above).</ins>

So this blog is stealing content and pinging the original blog (this is how I discovered them) and the best thing: the images are hotlinked. The stolen blog posts on their sever still point to the images on my server. This was a great opportunity to fiddle in my .htaccess a bit:

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.*\.)?HOTLINKINGDOMAIN\.com
RewriteRule [^(hotlink)]\.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif)$ wp-content/misc/hotlink.png [NC,R,L]
</IfModule>

With this lines added to the .htaccess file in my blog’s root directory I’m redirecting every included image which is viewed through one of the stolen posts to this image.

I’m curious to see whether this post will be stolen, too. Good thing the images will clearly state where the post is from.

Replaced “Send to” buttons with text explaining copy and paste.

Removed confirm dialog on Emoji selection to speed things up.

Removed text input field. Displaying Emojis directly in the page for convenient copy and paste.

My favorite: the title bar uses a WebKit gradient on iPhone/iPod touch instead of an image. Speeds up loading time.

General GUI improvements.

Every Safari user on Mac OS X should take a look at ClickToFlash which makes your browsing through the Flash infested World Wide Web pleasant again.

Using ClickToFlash, all of those icky Flash bits that have infected most webpages on the internets are replaced with a nice, smooth gradient and the word “Flash” set in a nice, pleasing font. When you want to view the Flash, just click on it!

Besides blocking Flash (with an option to whitelist certain sites) ClickToFlash has the very nice feature of displaying YouTube videos in the higher quality H.264 format. It even loads videos with a larger resolution than normal. Be sure to enable this in the preferences right after installing: Safari » ClickToFlash » Preferences.

While you’re in the preferences window you should disable the automatic loading of “Invisible” Flash. Find out why on the developer’s blog.

you’re telling me my mail@DOMAIN address is invalid because individuals can’t use generic mail prefixes. The reasoning behind this: they are often used by organizations.

NEWS FLASH: It’s 2009 and I am indeed allowed to buy a domain name and do whatever I want with it!

In ten years I’m using said mail@DOMAIN address you are the first site making this stuff up! At least let me verify my address.

Thanks.

It always bugged me that whenever I’m deleting an e-mail in Apple’s mail client Mail.app another mail is selected and subsequently marked as read.
Cmd + Shift + U
became a good friend of mine. (It marks a mail as unread.)

TurePreview is a lightweight Mail.app plugin which gives you all the time you need to change the selected mail and thus prevent a mail from being marked as read. This is very handy if you keep unread mails as a have-to-reply reminder in your inbox. (This is the opposite of GTD—I know and I do it just for mails I have to reply to.)

TurePreview can set a general delay or delays on a per account basis. Whatever floats your boat.

Today Tweetie for Mac was released and like any other Mac user on Twitter I had to try it on its first day.

I like to assign Twitter clients to all of my six Spaces (Mac OS X’s virtual desktops) and toggle the window using the F5 key. Tweetie for Mac didn’t allow this (bug?):

Of course the tested F-keys weren’t used without a modifier. To trick Tweetie into accepting a F-key without a modifier follow these steps:

Quit Tweetie for Mac

Locate the file
com.atebits.tweetie-mac.plist
in
~/Library/Preferences/
(“~” is your home directory)

Open the plist using Property List Editor.app (part of the Xcode SDK) or another plist editor

Change the value for
ShowHideTweetieHotkey_mods
to
8388608
which basically means: no modifier

Hope this bug will be fixed soon

Enjoy your new toggle freedom!
