deUncategorize
Prevent Posts from Accidentally Appearing in the »Uncategorized« Category
deUncategorize is bloody brilliant [...] Genius! Jo Salmon
Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve posted something on your WordPress blog in the appropriate categories just to notice several days later you forgot to assign a category which resulted in an Uncategorized post? Then this straight forward plugin is for you (and your WordPress installation)!
The whole purpose of this plugin is to deselect the default category set under Options → Writing (Uncategorized per default) if any other category is selected while writing or editing a post. JavaScript needs to be enabled and I’ve tested this using Safari, Firefox, Opera and IE 6 and 7 while using WordPress 2.0.4+, 2.1+, 2.2+ and 2.3+.
There’s only one version for WordPress 2.0.x and 2.1 and later. The only difference since WordPress 2.1 is the lack of a checked default category for new posts. Forgetting to set a category will result in an Uncategorized post after all. So deUncategorize still comes in handy to automatically deselect the default category when editing a post after submitting it and assigning the first custom category.
Adding deUncategorize to Your Blog
Indispensabile plugin per wordpress Maestro Alberto
Download the plugin and upload it to your blog’s /wp-content/plugins/
folder. Then activate it from your admin panel. No more uncategorized blogging… Simple as that!

I was using your plugin, but I noticed it added a couple of pipes | | before the content on both site and wordpress admin pages. It’s currently disabled, but that’s definitely something you should look into.
September 28th, 2006 at 07:42
Kenneth, that’s really strange because there is not a single pipe used in the plugin’s source and it definitely only modifies the admin pages for posting.
I’ve noticed on your site that there is a trailing pipe after your category list below your posts even though you said the plugin is deactivated now. I think the problem is another plugin. You may send me a more detailed problem report via my Contact page.

Thanks for your e-mail Kenneth! The download link now points to a zip file and the problem should be gone.

I wonder if you can add an extra functionality to this plugin…

hey,
great plugin!
that sucks about wp 2.0.5 –
until about 10 seconds ago i thought this was the best plugin i’d found in months.
i’m still going to install it, at least until the new version of wp comes out.
i’ve needed this exact feature for some time now and i’m just tired of waiting.
if you could get this plugin to selects it’s parent categories (as suggested by tricky), i would definitely keep it installed even after upgrading to 2.0.5 (assuming it didn’t conflict in some way)
also, i was wondering if it can “deUncategorize” past posts that have already been published. if not, there’s another feature you might consider adding to make this plugin even more powerful.
nice job!

Automatically selecting the parent category is not easily done (without modifying WP core files). I want this plugin to be ready after uploading and activating so manual changing of core files is out of question. Let’s wait and see which features WP 2.0.5 has.
As for automatically removing published posts from Uncategorized — it’s a bit dangerous (and would be a completely different plugin). It’s better to browse your Uncategorized archives and change it manually.

[...] This is brilliant. You have a default category (like, maybe, “uncategorized”) that any post you write gets put into. But if you check another category, that default stays checked. Thus, you can get posts that are categorized as “Summer Vacation” and “Uncategorized” which in turn makes you look like a moron or something. Install this plugin, and the default (i.e., “Uncategorized”) category will uncheck itself as if by magic. [...]
