Custom URL Shorteners and Why You Don’t Need Them Anymore

The URL shortener at http://isne.at (is neat) was my private URL shortener for Twitter back when they didn’t have their own. The shortener (and URL forwarding) will be deactivated and the isne.at URLs in my blog posts (Twitter Updates) replaced with the original ones.

Unfortunately there is no way for me to replace the URLs in the Tweets on twitter.com so those will stop working in the future. Ironically that was the very reason for me to create my own shortener: keeping the shortened links alive even when such a service ceases to exist.

The lesson we’ve learned today: nothing is forever and stop using (custom) URL shorteners—they’re not worth the hassle.
